Conundrum is an interdisciplinary solo performance that explores the manifestations of friction,
confrontation, and the obstacles of thought. Performing this physical work herself, Haveman challenges the viewer’s sensory and emotional aspects. With the use of object manipulation, physical theater and cinematic imagery, she experiments with the notion of identity as an idealism.
Her work is inspired by questioning human behavior and philosophies, from the vulnerable to the invincible, all under the umbrella of the (un)conscious self. In Conundrum, we see an entangled being with a three-meter-long metal chain as a metaphor for conditioned idealism. Which ideas are imposed by nurture, culture, and environment, and how does she distinguish them from her natural thoughts? Combining physical theater and text, she demonstrates how identity can give shape in abstraction while seeking a genuine connection with the audience.
Bio Yoko Haveman
Yoko Haveman (Brazilian/Japanese, 1994) is a Dutch interdisciplinary dance artist, creator, photographer, and director, with a background in martial arts, modern dance and music. As a creator, Haveman choreographed a short fiction dance film in 2023 called Paradise Lost by Jordy Tempelman, and directed a full-length music and dance concert called ‘Solastalgia’ with and for the eccentric indie band LUKA. Topics that inspire Haveman’s work include human behavior, philosophy, and cinematography. She shapes it with connection, absurdity, and an interest in the transient ways of life, translated to stage and film. Furthermore, Yoko has been nominated for the Young Swan Award for the most impressive dance performance by the Association of Theater and Concert Hall Directors (VSCD), in 2022.
