Marcus Azzini

2019

Director Marcus Azzini (Brazil) puts the concept of 'imagination' at the heart of his work. He is fascinated by the ability of actors to evoke worlds that are not real but that exist for the duration of a performance. Under his direction, he constantly strives to portray the personal: a person's direct physical and emotional relationship to other people and the world.

In season 2019-2020 Marcus creates with ICK the performance All Over - Acts of Love in which dancers and players surrender themselves to love. According to ICK, Azzini takes an important motif as his starting point: the fragility of the human being and the power of vulnerability in a society in which there is little room for the vulnerable.

Marcus Azzini has been artistic director at Toneelgroep Oostpool since 2012 and believes in theatre as a means for unforeseen 'encounters' with other people, times and ideas. He has directed Angels in America (2015), Allemaal mensen (2018) and People, Places & Things (2019). The company lets you experience that feelings can be contradictory and thoughts can change. That we live together with other people, who, like us, relate every day to the incomprehensibility of our existence. All of Oostpool's theatre makers share with audience the question: How to be human?
