Sedrig Verwoert

Sedrig Verwoert (1991, Suriname) was born in Suriname and moved to Amsterdam when he was three, where he later attended the dance education Urban Contemporary at the Amsterdam School of the Arts. In 2013, he won first prize at the prestigious Eurovision Young Dancers competition. After this, he danced with the American Peridance Contemporary Dance Company and Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company in Israel, among others. In 2017, he returned to the Netherlands, where he got a contract as a dancer with ICK Amsterdam. Since 2019, Verwoert has been a freelance dancer and as such he has appeared in the work of Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten, Nacera Belaza, Vincent Colomes, Amos Ben-Tal, Emanuel Gat, Rami Be'er, Igal Perry, Maurice Causey and Troels Primdahl, among others. For several years, Verwoert has been active as a choreographer. Since 2021, he has been associated with the Dutch National Ballet as Young Creative Associate. Furthermore, he collaborated as choreographer and dancer on Beyoncé's visual album Black is King and was artist in residence at De Appel Art Centre. For his creation They/Them, Verwoert, together with fellow choreographer and dancer Christian Yav, was nominated for a Swan for Most Impressive Dance Performance in 2020. In 2019, he won both the BNG Bank Dance Award and the Leo Spreksel Award.

Identity and transformation are important to Sedig Verwoert's work. The body is central: the search for connection with the space within yourself and the space around you. The relationship between art and an inclusive society inspires him to experiment mat different forms of interaction: from public workshops to working with multiple disciplines, with young people, the disabled and the elderly.

In 2022, he created the performance Within Without II with Nick Verstand, which premiered during Amsterdam Dance Event 2022. In March 2023, Sedrig Verwoert will present his new performance The Ritual at ICK-Fest in Bellevue.
